THE TEXT BOOKS:
Essential Geometry For Trigonometry, by Prior and Day.
Trigonometry, 6th Edition, by McKeague and Turner; Thompson publishers.
CALCULATORS:
An inexpensive scientific calculator with scientific notation and trig function keys (SIN, COS, TAN) will be required for some parts of the course. Graphing calculators are okay but will not be allowed on tests that require graphing.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Identify special triangles and their related angle and side measures.
- Evaluate the trigonometric function of an angle in degree or radian measure.
- Manipulate and simplify a trigonometric expression.
- Solve trigonometric equations and applications
- Use a calculator or other tools to solve triangles.
- Graph the basic trigonometric functions and apply changes in period, phase and amplitude to generate new graphs.
TOPICS OF STUDY:
The course begins with the elements of geometry important to the foundation of trigonometry. We then study the six trigonometric functions, their inverses and their graphs; identities and proofs related to trigonometric expressions; solving trigonometric equations; solving right triangles; and solving oblique triangles using the law of cosines and the law of sines.
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, nearly every day. Daily homework assignments will be posted on-line at my website, bobprior.com. It is expected that each homework assignment will be completed before the next class session. At the beginning of each class session, a minimal amount of time will be spent reviewing one or two questions. All other homework questions can be discussed during my office hours or in the math lab.
Homework will be collected on test days only and will be given a score of 10 points. Homework assignments must be placed inside of a portfolio folder (with pockets) with your name at the upper-right outside corner.
To receive the most credit, you must show complete work on each exercise. Homework may be given a lower score if it is not neat, if work is not shown, or if it is out of page order.
QUIZZES AND TESTS:
There may be some quizzes throughout the semester, worth about 10 points each. At the end of the semester, the percentage for all quizzes may be scaled to 100 points, based on the total number of quizzes given.
There will be four tests and a final exam. A test typically covers two chapters. The final exam is comprehensive; it covers material from the whole course.
FINAL EXAM:
All students are encouraged to take the final exam. However, if at the end of the semester, your test/quiz average is at least 93.0%, then you may skip the final and receive a B in the class. If your quiz/test average is from 83.0% to 92.9%, you may skip the final exam and receive a C in the class. All other students must take the final exam or risk getting a D or F in the course.
The final exam is on Tuesday, Decmeber 16, 8:00 - 10:30 AM in ATEC 205
GRADING:
The following grading scale is used to assign grades. Students are encouraged to keep track of their ongoing course percentage.
90.0% - 100% A
80.0% - 89.9% B
70.0% - 79.9% C
60.0% - 69.9% D
0.0% - 59.9% F
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is required. The instructor reserves the right to drop any student who misses four or more class sessions. Please be on time! If possible, be early! Any student not returning to class after the break may be counted absent for 1/2 day.
DROPPING THE COURSE:
I will likely drop you from the class if you miss two tests. However, don't depend on me to drop you. If you plan to drop the course, you should do so on your own through WebAdvisor, TigerTalk, or by filling out a drop card. Be aware of the two drop deadlines, shown in the calendar. Also, please e-mail me if this is your intention.
